MÉLISSE BRUNET, Music Director

The 2022 - 2023 Season finale concert, Bloom, marks the arrival of spring with works representative of the beauty of color and the renewal of the earth. This concert, at the Singletary Center for the Arts, includes works celebrating the flourishing beauty of color including Anna Clyne’s Color Field and Robert Schumann’s joyous Symphony No. 1 “Spring.” Guest percussion quartet, Sandbox Percussion, joins the orchestra for Viet Cuong’s Re(new)al, a concerto for percussion quartet and orchestra, inspired by renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro and solar. The piece utilizes found objects, such as compressed air cans and crystal glasses, to create a visually and aurally stimulating landscape of choreography. Julia Perry’s Homunculus C.F. features Sandbox Percussion alongside LexPhil percussionists, harpist, and celeste player in an “unfolding” of musical material inspired by her father’s medical practice in Akron, OH.

Repertoire to include: (Subject to change)

ANNA CLYNEColor Field
VIET CUONG - Re(new)al: Percussion Quartet Concerto
Featuring Sandbox Percussion
Ian David Rosenbaum, Jonny Allen, Terry Sweeney, Victor Caccese
JULIA PERRY - Homunculus C. F.
ROBERT SCHUMANN - Symphony No.1 in B-flat major “Spring”

DR. GEORGE ZACK

EMERITUS MUSIC DIRECTOR

We are honored to welcome Emeritus LexPhil Music Director and Conductor Laureate, Dr. George Zack as our special guest to our 2022 - 2023 Season Finale concert Bloom this Saturday, May 20th at the Singletary Center for the Arts!

A truly unforgettable figure to both the Lexington Philharmonic and the entire Lexington community, Dr. George Zack served as LexPhil’s Music Director for an incredible 37 years from 1972 to 2009. Known as “the People’s Maestro,” he and many devoted music lovers helped to build a professional orchestra that called on the dedication of thousands of individuals, businesses, and civic leaders across the bluegrass. Dr. Zack led these efforts by sharing the joy of music through performances for people of all ages and backgrounds. One of his greatest legacies continues to be his passion for fostering a love of music among young Kentuckians.

We invite everyone to join us this Saturday, May 20th to welcome Dr. Zack back to the Concert Hall for a special night, and to celebrate new LexPhil Music Director Mélisse Brunet’s first full season with the Lexington Philharmonic.
