Made in America
Symphony No. 31, "Paris"
Piano Concerto in G major
Tengku Irfan, piano
Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes
WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT THIS CONCERT:
This concert opens with Joan Tower's orchestral work 'Made in America,' a work commissioned by the League of American Orchestras and the Ford Motor Company! Tower is one of the most prolific female composers of all time, and her work is a celebration of America.
This concert is one of three during LexPhil’s 2018/2019 season that feature works by female composers!
Tengku Irfan makes his LexPhil debut as soloist for Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major. Now 20 years old, Irfan started his piano lessons at age 7 and developed an interest in composing shortly after. His major debut performance was at age 11, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto in E flat (Wo04) with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Aaron Copland's Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes is the orchestral suite from his ballet score. The fourth movement "Hoe-Down" is famous from the "Beef! It's What's for Dinner" commercials of the 90's. The work has a special connection to Kentucky — the fourth movement "Hoe Down" is scored almost note for note from Kentucky fiddler Bill Stepp's recording of "Bonaparte's Retreat"!
