The Power of Influence at the Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center explores how artists are affected by external sources. With works by Mozart, Joseph Bologne - Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Igor Stravinsky and Lexington-born composer Shawn E. Okpebholo, each piece is in a direct dialogue with influences from the past and present. Additional pre-concert chamber music will occur in the Community Room preceding the performance in the hall.

This pre-concert event has a capacity of 125 attendees.

Join us for a special pre-concert event and performance at 6:30 PM in the Community Room at the Lyric, with Music Director Mélisse Brunet in conversation with composer Shawn E. Okpebholo, followed by a performance of Shawn’s piece there is always light for clarinet, bassoon & marimba.

LEXPHIL STRING QUARTET

Based on the inspiring true story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Chevalier follows Bologne’s life from childhood in the French colony of Guadeloupe and his rise through Parisian society as a French Creole composer, virtuoso violinist, and fencer in pre-revolution France. 

On Sunday, April 23 at 2PM, the Lexington Philharmonic String Quartet will perform two short works by Bologne at The Kentucky Theatre in advance of a screening of the recently released film Chevalier.

Guest composer, Shawn E. Okpebholo, will be in Lexington for performances by the Lexington Philharmonic of two of his works on Saturday, April 29th on our program The Power of Influence. In advance of that performance, we're offering a special opportunity to meet, learn, and make music with Shawn! High school and college students are invited to a special event with Shawn and LexPhil staff on Friday, April 28th from 6-7PM in the Community Room of the Lyric Theater and Cultural Arts Center (300 E Third St. Lexington, KY 40508).

Following the Meet, Play, & Learn event with Shawn E. Okpebholo, students are invited to stick around and attend an open dress rehearsal with LexPhil as it prepares for the concert on Saturday, April 29th.  Students will get an up-close experience of the rehearsal process and have the opportunity to ask LexPhil musicians and staff questions. Students under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend. 


Students are welcome to attend either the Meet, Play, & Learn event or Open Rehearsal or both events!
