creative aging

Defined as a “field dedicated to using the power of the arts to enhance health and well-being in diverse institutional and community contexts.”

WHAT IS CREATIVE AGING?

Creative Aging is a relatively recent field of practice that emerged from the larger Arts in Health field which the
National Organization for Arts in Health defines as

a field dedicated to using the power of the arts to enhance health and well-being
in diverse institutional and community contexts.

Gene D. Cohen M.D. provided evidence in his 2006 landmark publication, “The Creativity and Aging Study: The Impact of Professionally Conducted Cultural Programs on Older Adults,” that participation by older adults in arts engagement has
positive psychological, physical and emotional health benefits.

creative aging at the
charles young community center

In the Fall of 2022, we launched a nine-week program at the Charles Young Community Center. The program, open to people of all musical abilities, provided opportunities for participants to be invited and supported in individually and collaboratively creating music. Incorporating traditional and non-traditional approaches to composition, the participants investigated the history and purpose of notation, expanded thinking around what can be considered notation, employed various means for idea generation, engaged with mindfulness practices that deepen sonic awareness, improvised collectively, and incorporated technology into the creative process.
