New Grant Puts LexPhil Musicians in Community Spaces

Thanks to a new grant from the League of American Orchestras LexPhil is able to expand its summer event series this year with two new community partnerships with the Lexington Art League and the Levitt AMP Your City Music Series in Whitesburg, KY.

The grant itself is a competitive program designed to advance the innovative work of recipients, highlighting the groundswell of new thinking at smaller orchestras across the country. LexPhil received the grant in April, 2018 and jumped at the chance to start implementing new community programming.

LexPhil musicians showcased a vibrant sonic landscape at the LAL's closing reception of their Altered Views exhibit in the Loudoun House Gallery. 

LexPhil staff and a string quartet also traveled to Whitesburg, KY for an evening performance as part of the Levitt AMP Whitesburg Music Series. The musicians performed quartets by Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Dvořák’s American String Quartet, with brief introductory notes and 'things to listen for' in between each work. Beyond the performance, the day also included a performance for a local kids camp, where the campers helped prepare and serve a delicious lunch for LexPhil staff and musicians, followed with the always popular Instrument Petting Zoo. Later, the Instrument Petting Zoo went to the Farmers Market in Whitesburg. The evening's performance at the Mountain Heritage Village was well attended, and was a perfect close to an incredibly fulfilling day for all.
