Our 2022-2023 Season RENEWAL explores our limitless potential, the forces that shape and influence us, and the spirit of renewal in our art, lives, and world. We celebrate our continued evolution and the announcement of our next Music Director & Conductor, who will be announced in summer 2022 and will lead the orchestra in performances this season.

Patriotic concert

Presented by the City of Lexington LFUCG Division of Parks & Recreation, spend the evening before July 4 with the Lexington Philharmonic for a free community concert on the grounds of historic Transylvania University and Gratz Park.  

Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic or enjoy dinner from various food trucks for this annual summer favorite!

Picnic with the Pops returns with Dancing in the Street: The Music of Motown, featuring Motown favorites made famous by artists including Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, The Temptations and Stevie Wonder at the Meadow on the grounds at Keeneland. Tickets and more information is available at www.lexpops.com.

Building on the success of last season's inaugural event, Symphonic Stroll will feature LexPhil musicians performing chamber music across the beautiful grounds of Josephine Sculpture Park, “where art meets earth.” This family-friendly event will feature live music, interactive activities, and food trucks. Two entry times are offered for admission (4PM & 5PM) with performances occurring between 4PM - 8PM.

In partnership with Lexington Historian, Yvonne Giles, LexPhil presents Legacy - The Perry Family, a free, outdoor chamber concert at the historic African Cemetery No. 2. Guest vocalists, Alicia Helm McCorvey and Whit Whitaker, will join a quartet of LexPhil musicians for this program featuring vocal and instrumental chamber works by composers Julia Perry and Florence Price, interwoven with narration about the life and legacy of the Perry family. African Cemetery No. 2 is the resting place of many notable members of Lexington’s African American community, including the grandparent’s of Julia Perry. This valued partnership between LexPhil, African Cemetery No. 2, and Yvonne Giles hopes to continue to share the meaningful stories of the Perry family and Lexington citizens.

In the first full-orchestra performance of the season, LexPhil takes the stage at the Singletary Center for the Arts in a program celebrating the unbounded potential in all of us with Limitless. The evening opens with Gabriela Lena Frank’s Three Latin American Dances, inspired by the many musical traditions born of diverse Latin American cultures. Violinist Simone Porter returns as guest artist for the lyrical Barber Violin Concerto. Closing the program is Aaron Copland’s expansive Symphony No. 3, with its famous quotation of his Fanfare for the Common Man, exhibiting his abstract voice and accessible beauty to create a score that is, in his words, “a serious statement.”

Edward Elgar - Enigma Variations

Continuous Variation, at the Singletary Center for the Arts, derives its name from a technique used by composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich in her Symphony No. 1, a work which demonstrates the potential of a handful of ideas to develop into new material. This piece was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1983, making Zwillich the first female composer to receive this esteemed prize. Violist Jordan Bak joins LexPhil to perform Béla Bartók’s Viola Concerto, left unfinished at his death and completed by Tibor Serly from sketches, memories and ideas. The evening concludes with Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, composed of fourteen variations on an original theme each representing one of Elgar's close friends.

The Power of Influence at the Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center explores how artists are affected by external sources. With works by Mozart, Joseph Bologne - Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Igor Stravinsky and Lexington-born composer Shawn Okpebholo, each piece is in a direct dialogue with influences from the past and present. Additional pre-concert chamber music will occur in the Community Room preceding the performance in the hall..

The 2022 - 2023 Season finale concert, Bloom, marks the arrival of spring with works celebrating the beauty of color and renewal of the earth. This concert at the Singletary Center for the Arts includes works celebrating the flourishing beauty of color including Anna Clyne’s Color Field and Robert Schumann’s joyous Symphony No. 1 “Spring.” Guest percussion quartet Sandbox Percussion join the orchestra for Viet Cuong’s work Re(new)al a concerto for percussion quartet and orchestra, inspired by renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro and solar. The piece utilizes found objects, such as compressed air cans and crystal glasses to create a visually and aurally stimulating landscape of choreography. Julia Perry’s Homunculus C.F. features Sandbox Percussion alongside LexPhil percussionists, harpist, and celeste player in an “unfolding” of musical material inspired by her father’s medical practice in Akron, OH.
