WEKU 88.9 and Lexington Philharmonic Announce New Performances to be aired in Encore Broadcast Series
As the longtime broadcast partner of the Lexington Philharmonic, public radio station WEKU 88.9 and LexPhil have announced five more LexPhil archival performances as part of their Encore Broadcast Series every two weeks beginning October 3rd, 2020 through November 29, 2020. WEKU 88.9 and the Lexington Philharmonic aired five past performances during the months of May and June of this year. The WEKU encore broadcasts are one way WEKU and the Lexington Philharmonic are helping Kentuckians connect to the music of their orchestra safely at home.
WEKU Director and General Manager Mike Savage says continuing broadcast of LexPhil performances is critical at a time when attending live performances is just not possible due to the ongoing pandemic. “This collaborative partnership to bring the orchestra into the homes of Kentuckians demonstrates the commitment by WEKU and LexPhil to provide important arts and cultural programming to the public during a difficult time for so many.”
The first broadcast will feature the orchestra’s 2019 performance of Verdi’s Requiem, featuring the combined choirs of Asbury University, Berea College, Centre College, and Eastern Kentucky University. This special program will air Saturday, October 3 at 9 p.m. on WEKU Classical channel at WEKU.org and Sunday, October 4 at 8 p.m. on WEKU 88.9 FM.
“We are excited to continue this recently developed facet of our longstanding partnership with WEKU,” says Allison Kaiser, LexPhil Executive Director. “The Encore Broadcast Series has been enthusiastically received by our community during this time when we are unable to safely gather and perform large-scale, live orchestral concerts. We are very grateful for the generosity of spirit, time and commitment from WEKU.” WEKU encore broadcasts of Lexington Philharmonic concerts will be aired on both WEKU Classical, and WEKU 88.9. Following broadcast on WEKU Classical, listeners will have two weeks from each broadcast date to listen to each concert stream. The WEKU Encore Broadcast Series dates and links will be available on the Lexington Philharmonic website at https://lexphil.org/lexphil-living-room and on the WEKU website at WEKU.org.
The Lexington Philharmonic continues to provide other ways to connect with music online at the LexPhil Living Room. This platform includes performance videos from LexPhil musicians, education videos and resources for families, and other national and international music resources to continue making orchestral music a part of life at home.
